“I now choose to rise above my personality problems to recognize the magnificence of my being. I am totally willing to learn to love myself.” Louis L Hay
To rise above our own problems those of us affected by the disease of alcoholism must work the program too. We may not take the poison physically but we take and respond to it emotionally. Spiritually the guilt and resentment, anger and resentment take its toll on us and erode us physically mentally and spiritually. We can help ourselves by working those same steps.
To understand the importance of being the child of a Higher Power I must work every day to learn more about my Higher Power and all that my Higher Power does for me and for others. In meditation, in reading, in work, in service. These are all ways that I can develop my relationship with my Higher Power. In prayer and devotion, in holding fast to my Higher Power’s side.
I am struck by the line: “I am powerless to change the fact that alcoholism has affected my life. Only a Power greater than myself can overcome the effects of this disease.”
I am powerless over that. I didn’t choose it, I didn’t choose that this disease takes many generations to overcome and still affected me as an Adult Child of an Alcoholic. I didn’t choose that without constant working of the steps and program and contact with others working to overcome it that there would be the inclinations to be drawn in by it. Those of you who may be younger reading this who are on this path stay the course. For yourself, for the next generation and for the generation that follows.
Staying close to my Higher Power is truly the one thing that saves me. And when it comes down to being drawn to the devil of addiction or resting securely and safely in my Higher Power’s love, there is no question of where my soul and spirit and mind feel the most peace.
And I can smile because my Higher Power is there every time without fail . Whether my Higher Power carries me or whether I just walk with my Higher Power, it is truly miraculous to me how when I slow down enough to look, to see, that it become so clear that my Higher Power is right there, as close as my breath.
