“God is not partial. All His Children have His total love, and all His gifts are freely given to everyone alike…unless you fully recognize your complete dependence on God, you cannot know the real power…” From: A Course In Miracles: Text Chapter 1 v 88
We who have embarked upon a quest for serenity by reaching out to Al-Anon or other 12 step programs learn that our Higher Power works in many ways. When we get to steps 2 and 3, we come to believe and we turn over our lives to the care of our Higher Power. That is scary stuff for many of us.
Our own thinking and control managed to get us to this place somehow and many of us struggle to relinquish that control. Deeper than that, many of us do not feel that without a lavish outward display of care “taking” that we are worthy of just being loved as we are. Many people, addicts and those affected by addiction, struggle with this. Many of us have never known the truth of unconditional love, yet steps 2 and 3 ask us to embrace that truth.
When we get to step 2 we …come to believe…
When we get to step 3 it may take a while to work through and get to the point where we can turn our lives and will over.
Step 3 in the 12 steps reads: 3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
Part of working this 12 step program is utilizing meetings and readings and integrating them into our being until we depend on them like air. But our relationship with our Higher Power is a personal one. And it is no different. As we depend on the wisdom our Higher Power gives us in the 12 steps we also must ,sometimes for the first time, integrate our Higher Power into our being in the same way.
We will necessarily start at one point in the understanding of our Higher Power but we will not stay there. The relationship is a living one. And as with any other relationship, what we come to understand about our relationship with our Higher Power is that it is infinite unfathomable and all encompassing.
God is not partial. All His Children have His total love…
What an awesome, awesome feeling it is to know, not just believe, that the God of our understanding loves us more than we can possibly in our limited way understand. And like the steps themselves as we continue to grow in them and continue to grow in our relationship with our Higher Power, our understanding will continue to deepen.
The beauty of all of this is that it will never cease to become greater, fuller and all encompassing. And so it is with the steps, and so it is with the God of our Understanding.
