Feelings are not Facts. In one of the 12 step readings for today they talk about just that. It talks about fear taking a part in that. Fear based living is not living. Fear based living is often living wanting to control that which can not be controlled. Sometimes that thing that can not be controlled is the unknown sometimes it is other people sometimes events the list goes on there is definitely more we can’t control than can.
Not that fear does not serve it’s purpose but fear can cause something psychology calls “fight or flight” it puts people into urgent/important mode. Something we hear in 12 step meetings is that “things that are important are rarely urgent and things that are urgent are rarely important.” Fear often can produce the sense that they are. Fight or Flight has a place, in particular on the battlefield or if our lives; physical, spiritual or mental are in danger. But for the most part our thoughts push us to this point.
Fear can stop us from the next right thing or it can propel, it can launch us into doing something that we wouldn’t normally do. Fear is also something we often feel inside ourselves about something we are thinking – often repeatedly. Recognized fear also can cause us to become angry or frustrated. By that time, we are on a dangerous slippery slope. However at any time we can Stop and Think and reach for the ladder the program provides us.
One of the most important things I’ve found to combat “fear” is my Higher Power. I have learned over many years that if I go to my Higher Power first before human beings, that much of my own worst thinking never happens. And by human beings I mean also my own thoughts. We all are works in progress, seeking progress not perfection and so we all fail in this.
So in life when we turn to human beings we may or may not get what our brain tells us, our mind tell us we need. Our Higher Power can all ways give us what we need.
Can a human be our Higher Power? Feelings are real, we experience them in our being but they are caused by our thoughts. And often, they are repetitive thoughts that are incorrectly projected and miscreated. There is error in our thoughts not truth. When there is error in our thoughts often there is error in our feelings…and as it is with us it often is with others. Feelings are not facts.
Fear creates a cesspool of miscreated thoughts and feelings. Today I can recognize that something that seems illogical, may just be the miscreated and projected thoughts of another, or myself and in the instant I recognize that I can turn to my Higher Power. Every day I may be reminding myself to get back on track, but as long as I’m headed that direction, it is always progress not perfection and it is always healing.
